Resveratrol

Resveratrol is a compound often associated with the health benefits of red wine, because of its powerful antioxidant and cardio-protectant properties. It promotes cardiovascular health through its antioxidant action and its ability to modulate platelet aggregation and arachidonic acid metabolism.

Resveratrol exists in both trans- and cis-forms. However, published research suggests that only the trans- form has considerable biological activity. This Resveratrol is in the trans form and is derived from one of the richest known sources, Polygonum cuspidatum, an herb utilized as a nutritional agent for centuries.

Resveratrol's antioxidant activity, or ability to neutralize free radicals (unstable molecules that attack healthy cells and damage membranes and DNA), may account for its beneficial effects. Resveratrol also appears to promote healthy blood composition and circulation, and may also have anti-inflammatory properties.

A recent landmark study from Harvard Medical School, published in the medical journal Nature, found that ultra-high doses of resveratrol allowed obese mice to eat a high fat diet and still live a long and healthy life. Researchers discovered that the liver and other systems in obese mice remained healthy, despite their poor health, and fat-related deaths dropped 31 percent for those taking a resveratrol supplement.

Emerging research now shows that Resveratrol also stimulates cells to behave as if they had been exposed to caloric restriction, the most powerful life-extending approach known. This may be the reason for the benefits described in the previous paragraph.*
